News: WFP increases support for Lebanese National Poverty Targeting Programme

The World Food Programme (WFP), with support from the European Union, Germany, Canada, Norway, Italy, and France, has increased the number of families supported through the National Poverty Targeting Programme (NPTP) by 195,000 people per month.

Cash transfer top-ups will also help recepients whose purchasing power is being eroded by high inflation.

This increase in support will be welcomed in a country still reeling from the multiple crises of the COVID-19 pandemic, Beirut explosion and political instability. 

But, can it shine light on the bigger questions – temporary measures are necessary, but how do they contribute to long-term national commitments to building an inclusive lifecycle social security system in Lebanon?
